I think I wouldn’t be wrong if I said a lot of us have wanted to become a writer at some point in their lives. Sitting in the comfort of your study, sipping hot coffee, chocolate (or maybe whiskey) and letting your imagination fly. For me, it’s always been a perfect idea of life. I was pretty good at creative writing at school, then at university, and then I stopped. No idea why, I probably didn't have enough time or it just wasn't relevant. So, around six months ago I started a course on Coursera about how to write. By the way, it’s an amazing source of various courses for all kinds of professionals — from IT to painting — mainly in English, of course. Anyway, I started this course and here are some tips for those who’d like to be better at writing creative texts in any language, be it Russian, English or any other:
Read! Might sound obvious, but the more you read, the better your own texts become. Just try not to copy ideas and style completely, although, as they say, the first step to mastery is always imitation.
Create ideas. Think of the craziest ideas you’d want to write about. Note them down in short sentences. For example, a story about a woman who grew a tiny universe in her closet. Sounds insane? Then it’s the right thing!
Actually start writing. You might dream about becoming a writer but it’s just a dream until you actually start doing something!
Try to overcome fear of criticism. I understand it is super, impossibly hard, so first discuss your texts with people who you know wouldn't go too hard on you.
Use failure as fuel. This hint comes from Stephen King’s admirable book “On Writing” which I highly recommend to anyone who wants to create texts. Don't get discouraged, try again and again as long as it brings you joy.
Good luck!
