I had a great week of lessons last week. We had a fantastic evening talking about cars and then one of my students spoke about something that happened to them and a friend. What it was I cannot remember, but... I do remember the use of «I» and «me» was a challenge.
Now, the little sentence I am about to discuss gives many native speakers a problem or two. The main reason being the use of bad language in movies and music. This is the sentence: «My friend and me went to the movies». Why is this wrong? Many native speakers will agree with this construction however, my English teacher would «smack me upside the head» if I used that construction in English class!
The decision to choose between «I» and «me» is easily made if I look at the sentence without the other person(s) included. Look at this (and I will use the previous example): «… me went to the movies». I hope you will agree with me that this is not the correct version of this sentence, it should read: «I went to the movies». Well, you have your solution, the correct sentence is: «My friend and I went to the movies».
Here is another example: «John invited my brother and I to his party». Let’s use my trick again, remove the other person (my brother) from the sentence: «John invited I to his party». Again, this is not correct, I should be saying that «John invited me to his party». The correct version of this sentence then is: «John invited my brother and me to his party».
I enjoy finding little tricks that can be useful when learning something new, I do hope this helps you decide between «I» and «me» when you have to use it in a sentence.
Have a fantastic week, dear readers!
