The other day, a student asked me how they can improve their ability to make their own sentences. He didn’t want to spout memorized sentences from the textbook. He wanted to know how to articulate himself and form his own thoughts in English. My advice to him as follows.
Think in English. This may seem weird, but it is extremely affective. While you are doing your everyday tasks, try to think in English rather than Russian. This forces you to stop translating your thoughts into English. Instead, they just come out naturally. I did this while learning Japanese in university and it made a huge difference.
Listen to podcasts and talk back to them. Give your own thoughts about what the hosts are talking about. It may seem strange speaking to yourself in English in your car on the way to work, but again — it works.
Meet an English-speaking penpal online. There are a variety of websites that allow people from all over the world study languages through pw pals for free. You would teach them some Russian, and in exchange, they will speak to you in English. This gives you a chance to form your own sentences and be corrected when you make mistakes.
I hope this advice helps you form your own sentences in English!
