IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is one of the most popular English language tests in the world established in 1989 and is accepted by various academic institutions and professional organisations in the UK, Australia, Canada, the US and the rest of the world.
It is used to test the proficiency of non-native English language speakers. It comes in two modules: Academic and General Training. They are the same in terms of time allocation and length of written responses, but differ in other areas primarily in reading and writing parts where the context and purpose of the tasks are dissimilar. One takes the Academic module if he/she wants to study at tertiary level (bachelor’s degree or higher) and General Training if the purpose is for immigration, work or study at non-degree level.
The test is valid for two years and is scored on a scale of 1-9 with 1 meaning “Non User” and 9 an “Expert User”. One may also get a 0 if there is no assessable information provided at all.
If you are planning to take the test in the future, be sure to be clear with your purpose and give yourself enough time to prepare for the test. Good luck and I hope you’ll be able to get your target score.
