A short and sweet story using the short and sweet word, «key» (and parts of it are true).
In high school, I had a key (big) crush on a boy who lived across the street named Billy Keyes (last name). He wore a black leather jacket and a silver key (jewelry) around his neck. Coolest of all was that he rode a motorcycle and had a skull keychain (holds multiple keys) hanging from the ignition. One morning, he stopped alongside of me while I was heading off to school and asked me if I wanted a ride on the back of his motorcycle. My heart pitter-pattered with puppy love, but I turned up my nose in the air and rolled my eyes, indicating my answer in the negative... and Billy Keyes sped off to school.
When I got home from school that day, I just had to express my love for Billy. So, I ran into my room and pulled out my private diary and unlocked it with my secret key (used to unlock anything that is locked). I wrote, «Billy Keyes, you have the key to my heart (only Billy could have access to my love)!». Then I tapped out «I love Billy Keyes» on the typewriter keys (typewriters were before computers) and used the return key (enter key on the laptop) to make a new line with each declaration of love for Billy.
That wasn’t all! Then I skipped to the piano and banged out on the black and white keys (piano keys), «Brand New Key, Pair of Roller Skates» (YouTube the song and you’ll see how we used a key for roller skates). Maybe I didn’t want to ride on the back of his motorcycle, but I did want to roller skate with him!
The next song that I pounded out on the piano keys was a song called «Key Largo». I think the song was written in a major key (musical term). It’s a love song that is reminiscent of an old movie called «Key Largo» which took place in the Florida Keys (islands off the coast of the US state of Florida). You can imagine how keyed up (nervous or excited) I was — I really sang out loudly and out of key (off the notes — not melodious)!
I never did have that ride on Billy Keyes’ motorcycle or go roller skating with him... but last I heard, Billy Keyes became a SKF — a statistical key figure (important person) in a key corporation (major corporation).
