Strange topic, I know but it will become clear soon!
I was listening to music this morning, as I always do when I am getting ready — music is a major part of my life — when I heard the song «Shotgun» by George Ezra. This got me thinking about the word «shotgun».
The obvious meaning is that of a weapon which does serious damage to the person or thing which stands in the way of the bullet. It is also not the meaning I would like to focus on.
«I call shotgun», the next time you and your friends are driving somewhere, you should use this phrase. It means that you will be riding in the front seat, next to the driver (you don’t have to sit in the back!). It comes from more dangerous times in history when there was a person — armed with a shotgun — who rode next to the driver of the stagecoach and protected the occupants from danger.
«It looks like it was a shotgun wedding». Not such a good thing to say about the bride and groom, this is often used to say that there possibly is a baby on the way for a couple who have not yet gotten married!
There is also «a shotgun style house»… This is a house that is built in a long, narrow, rectangular fashion. The rooms are arranged one behind the other with a door at each end of the building.
Happy speaking, people! Never stop!
