Hello, everyone! A few days ago, I went to a tattoo shop to have a sketch made. While I was waiting for the artist in the lobby, I heard a couple speaking with North American accents. I approached them, and asked if they were from America.
It turns out, one of them was from America. But the woman he was with was Russian. I was impressed, because her American accent was indistinguishable from a native speaker. I asked how she perfected her accent so I could tell my students.
She said that she had stayed in Washington for two years. While she was there, she mindfully listened to the accents of those around her. She analyzed the ways in which their embouchures were shaped while speaking. She also learned to open her mouth up wide, and mastered the intimations through listening and repeating on the spot.
This just goes to show the power of immersion and imitation. If we are ever having a conversation, feel free to imitate me (Or mock me!). Have a good one.
