In this grammar article, you are going to learn about the aspects of expressing wishes in different forms, and even in the past. So, in which situations do people express wishes? Are they related to the present and future only? Let’s delve deeper into this topic, we will be using I wish, If only.
Wishes in the present are separated into three parts and uses:
When you wish for things to change but it’s impossible or merely impossible:
In this matter, we use the following grammar structure:
I wish I had enough money to travel around the world (but I don’t have enough money).
Хотел бы я, чтобы у меня было достаточно денег, чтобы путешествовать по миру (но у меня их недостаточно).
When you have the desire to possess an ability or talk about a possibility that you want to change:
For using this skill, follow this instruction and its attached example:
She wishes she could swim (but she cannot).
Она хотела бы уметь плавать (но она не умеет).
When you want to change something that causes annoyance:
This skill requires the following grammar structure:
I wish you would stop that noisy music.
Я бы хотел, чтобы ты прекратил эту шумную музыку.
I wish the bad weather would stop.
Я бы хотел, чтобы плохая погода поскорее прекратилась.
Don’t use this to talk about yourself. E.g. I wish I would … (this form is a mistake because you are talking about yourself).
Extra Information: When you use formal English, you can use “I wish I were” instead of “I wish I was”, but the most common form is “I wish I was”.
When we want to express regret about something we wish happened in the past but it didn’t, we can use the following grammar structure:
I wish I’d stayed home that night (expressing regret for not staying home in the past).
Жаль, что я не остался дома в ту ночь (выражая сожаление о том, что не остался дома в прошлом).
He wishes he’d studied something different (he didn’t study something different).
Он хотел бы изучать что-то другое (он не изучал что-то другое).
They wish they’d brought a tent with them (they didn’t bring a tent with them).
Они жалеют, что не взяли с собой палатку.
If only is a bit tricky, but don’t let this intimidate you, it’s all about showing more emotions to it, and it often depends on your intonation while speaking. You can use If Only as same as I wish, and you can use it both in the present and the past as same as the examples I demonstrated above.
