Some may not know this, but there are many different accents in the United States. The southern accent, the New York accent, the midwestern accent, etc. But America is such a young country. Why are there so many accents in such a young country?
The United States was founded by British colonists who were tired of paying the British monarchy’s outrageously high taxes. The new Americans wanted to distance themselves from the British culturally. So they spoke with a new, contrived accent that would later be known as the colonial, of New York accent.
During the civil war between the northern US and the southern US, the southerners wanted to be as different from the north as possible. So they also spoke with a contrived, new accent. Meaning that there were not two distinct accents in the US.
The midwestern United States accent is a bastardization of the Ontario accent, from Canada. Because Ontario is an economic powerhouse for Canada, the northwestern US states like Minnesota and Wisconsin did a lot of business with its people. They ended up adopting parts of the Ontario accent into their own.
I encourage everyone reading to look up examples of each accent on YouTube. You will be shocked at how many different, distinct accents there are in the US.
