A lot of people confuse British food with American ‘Fast Food’. One of my students at BigAppleSchool wants to be a professional chef and is very interested in this subject.
Many foreigners think that British food is boring and only comprises Fish & Chips and other ‘Fast Food’. Nothing could be further from the truth, especially in recent years as people are discovering healthy living and even returning to their gardens and allotments (our version of dacha!) to grow vegetables and spices.
It may surprise our students to know that there is a rich history of delicious dishes in Britain. Many of the traditional Russian dishes can also be found in our home cooking, such as pies, cakes, soups, stews, potatoes, tasty vegetables and all sorts of meat and fish.
Food became boring in Britain as a result of the food shortages during the 2nd World War. Food was rationed and only a limited variety was available.
After the war, people forgot how to prepare the dishes of our grandmothers and many turned to American ‘Fast Food’. But now, thanks to great cooks like Gordon Ramsey and Jamie Oliver and other television chefs we can now re-learn the skills of our grandmothers. Now that we must sit at home, maybe we have time to learn some British cooking skills! It is amongst the best in the world because our ingredients are so fresh.
