The band Black Sabbath released their first album, entitled Black Sabbath in February 1970. It is widely considered to be the first heavy metal album. The term heavy metal is thought to have been coined, because many of the bands playing this type of music (including Black Sabbath) came from Birmingham. A city known for its numerous metal working industries.
Black Sabbath went on to make 17 albums in all, the last being released in 2013. They stopped touring in 2017 as all the members were over 70.
I never had an opportunity to see them live so when I heard that a tribute band was playing a concert in Devizes, near where I live, I decided that I would go and see them. A tribute band with a difference. All female and from the USA.
So last Friday, two friends and I went to see them play.
Three blokes on a night out in England usually means beer and often a curry. Therefore we began our evening in a local “Indian”. In fact most of these restaurants are run by Bangladeshi’s not Indians. Eating spicy South Asian food is very popular in England.
After our meal, accompanied by several beers, or in my case ciders, we went to the concert venue. This was a small nightclub beneath the Victorian Corn Exchange in the centre of Devizes. Unfortunately for the band, the audience probably numbered no more than 200. The other thing of note about the audience was the fact that even though we are all in our early 60s, we were the youngest there. Lots of 70 plus pensioner rockers!
The band was excellent, just like the real thing. An excellent evening and I hope someday they will return.
