The different ways of pronunciation letter combinations in English is a constant frustration for my students and I really do understand why...
Some words have an origin in a different language and then uses the same pronunciation. If you think about chemistry the “ch” is pronounced as a “k” because of its Greek origin. Otherwise it is pronounced like Russian “ч” as in church...
To illustrate this frustrating habit in this crazy but beautiful language I will use this to find a new way to spell the word potato. Please note, this is purely for fun and not a serious conversation at all!
GH can be pronounced as P in the word HICCOUGH.
OUGH can be pronounced as an O in the word DOUGH.
PHTH can be pronounced as a T in the word PHTHISIS.
EIGH is pronounced as A in NEIGHBOUR.
TTE is a simple T in the word GAZETTE.
EAU is pronounced as O in PLATEAU.
If all the above is taken into account the correct spelling of the word POTATO should be: GHOUGHPHTHEIGHTTEAU.
Crazy, I know... and please remember that this is an illustration of the strange spelling rules in English.
I wood dew it write butt eye dew knot wont two (there are 9 errors in this sentence, find them!)
Happy speaking until the next time we chat!
