The strangest things appear in my daily teaching of English, my Google search thinks I only want to know about English and suggests some interesting sites to peruse! One of my web searches put me onto some really interesting facts about the English language. I will share a few of these with you today.
I have never heard about a pangram until today. I am aware of all sorts of things in mathematics (I taught maths for 25 years!) but many of the peculiar things in English are still new and interesting to me. So what is a pangram, I hear you ask. Well, simply put, it is a sentence which contains every letter in the language. Look at the following sentence: "The quick, brown fox jumps over the lazy dog." Yes, I also checked if it is true!
Have you ever heard of a ghost word? Neither have I until today... Apparently these are words which never really existed. The word "dord" was in the English dictionary for 8 years because of a printing error! I think this is possibly the funniest thing I have ever heard...
Something a little more historic. The words "I," "we," "two" and "three" are some of the oldest words in the language and the word "I" is the most commonly used word in conversation. Hm, makes English speakers sound a little self-centered, don’t you think?
A fun one with which to end this article. The word "swims" will remain "swims" even when turned upside down... Yes, I see you turning your phone upside down to check...
Have fun, folks! Until next time — keep talking!
