It’s a well known fact that listening to music and podcasts in a language can be a good way to learn that language. But sometimes, listening to the wrong thing can delay your progress.
For instance, I know that many of my younger students like American rappers like Lil Pump, Lil Xan, Lil Peep, etc. Listening to these kinds of rappers can actually teach you incorrect English, and probably lower your IQ.
These rappers use very poor English that only the bottom of American society uses. Learning this kind of English will make people look at you funny. Could you imagine a Russian person speaking like a ghetto rapper in the USA?
«Aye yo wuz gud ya’dy kno wuhdid is mane...». People would either laugh or scorn you.
Here are two general rules of thumb when deciding which English music to listen to for studying:
Don’t listen to anyone named Lil __.
Don’t listen to rap music after the year 2000, with few exceptions.
Pretty much everything else is fair game. Happy studying!
