In the USA, people love the outdoors! I`m lucky to be living in a very beautiful state where there are many opportunities to be out in the nature. Today we`ll learn some words and phrases to describe outdoor activities.
To go for a hike/to go hiking/to hike means to walk, especially in the countryside. The difference between walking and hiking is that hiking is usually over a longer distance and people hike outside of the city — for example, in the mountains or in a forest. When people hike, they typically wear hiking boots and bring a backpack with water, snacks and perhaps extra clothes in case it rains or sunscreen if it’s sunny out. It’s a good idea to bring these things even if you go for a short hike in case you get lost.
To go camping means to travel somewhere and stay in a tent (палатка). Some people drive to their camping site and bring all their camping gear with them, and that’s called car camping. Camping gear are the things you need for camping, such as your tent, a camping stove (походная плита), an axe (топор), camping chairs etc. Some people go backpacking, which means they bring all their camping gear with them in a backpack (рюкзак). Backpacking is more difficult because you have to carry everything you need, but it allows you to camp in beautiful places where there aren’t many people around. In the US, you need a permit (разрешение) to camp. You can buy a permit online or from the nearest Park Ranger Office.
Park rangers are people whose job is to take care of and protect a national park.
