For IELTS speaking, if you are preparing on your own, you can always watch free videos online pausing the video just before the candidate answers and giving your own response to the question. Then play the video again in order to compare your response and analyse that of the candidate’s. Break it down, so you can fully understand the components that make for a good answer. Again, just like in writing, you can always borrow certain words and even ideas that you can incorporate into your own answer. There are plenty of IELTS speaking videos on YouTube. Some channels I recommend are: IELTS Liz, E2 IELTS and IELTS Advantage.
As for reading and listening, there is no single piece of advice that works for all. We all learn and approach tests differently, so go with the one that works best for you. The only thing I can say here is, apart from listing down all the unfamiliar words into your word bank, do as many tests as you can. As they say, “Practice makes perfect.” You will eventually get used to the various accents and will be more comfortable with the texts the more you do the practice tests. If you wish to do online tests that come with an answer key, one of the most popular sites is IeltsExam. It has a lot of free practice tests for both Academic and General Training.
All in all, these are just some practical tips that I can share with you. Besides these, you need to be disciplined in devoting some time during the week for your IELTS preparation. Remember your success depends mainly on you. So, if you have set your mind to take the test, do all the necessary preparations and be sure that you are really serious about your goal. Good luck!
