Sometimes when we’re planning something or creating something new, we need ideas that will make our plan work or input that will speed up the creation process. This is when suggestions are most welcome. As the dictionary defines it, a suggestion is “an idea or plan put forward for consideration.” And speaking of suggestions, there are a number of ways to do it. Let’s examine them one by one.
One way of suggesting ideas is by using should or ought to. For example, you may say, “I think you should try a different strategy if the other one doesn’t work”, or “The government ought to reduce the rate of taxes.”
Another one is by using could. This is done if you think it’s possible to improve a situation and want to recommend a course of action. For instance, you may say, “We could reduce our energy consumption by turning off computers when they’re not in use.”
A third way is by using the verb suggest itself. As in, “I suggest we get a financial adviser”, or “They suggest presenting the project to international organisations.”
Finally, you may use questions that begin with Shall we..., Why don’t we..., or How about...? Examples include: “Shall we offer them some discounts?” or “How about leasing equipment instead of buying them?”
