So, today we’re speaking about action verbs and the difference between them. We’re not going to speak about regular verbs like walk and go, you’ve heard too much about them, let's go somewhere more advanced.
The first couple is to tiptoe and to creep. They both mean to move slowly but the first is about walking quietly with only the tips of the toes touching the ground while creep is to move slowly with the abdomen close to the ground or just moving quietly and carefully too.
I let myself in with my key and tiptoed up the stairs.
Я открыла дверь своим ключом и на цыпочках поднялась по лестнице.
I crept up the stairs, trying not to wake my parents.
Я прокрался вверх по лестнице, стараясь не разбудить родителей.
However, sometimes we can use them together:
We crept around on tiptoes so as not to disturb him.
Мы крались вокруг на цыпочках, чтобы не потревожить его.
Next is about jumping: hop, skip and leap. Leap usually means to jump high or a long way, to overcome distance, to move suddenly and quickly:
The horse leapt a five-foot wall.
Лошадь перепрыгнула пятифутовую стену.
There's a good expression too: a leap of faith — a belief in something that is not known or has not been done before:
These reforms are totally untested and will require a leap of faith on the part of teacher.
Эти реформы абсолютно непроверены и потребуют решительного шага со стороны учителя.
Skip is to move lightly making a little jump with each step:
She skipped happily along beside me.
Она радостно скакала рядом со мной.
To hop is to either jump on one foot (He hopped to bed. — Он прыгнул в постель.), on both feet (A robin was hopping around. — Вокруг прыгала малиновка.) or just to move quickly (I dumped my bags at a motel and hopped to the outskirts of town. — Я бросил свои сумки в мотеле и поскакал на окраину города.). Also we can say to hop a bus/plane/train when we make a quick decision to do so.
I hopped a plane for New York.
Я сел на самолет до Нью-Йорка.
I think, even in the way these words sound, you can intuitively feel the difference: a hop is something small and a leap is a bit longer.
And the last couple is to stroll and to dash. Stroll usually means to slowly walk, wander on foot, while to dash means to run quickly or for a short distance:
People were strolling along the beach.
Люди прогуливались по пляжу.
He dashed along the platform and jumped on the train.
Он промчался по платформе и вскочил в поезд.
Не забывайте, что ваш словарный запас необходимо не только пополнять лексическими единицами, но и активно использовать в повседневной жизни, что вы можете сделать на занятиях с Натальей!
