Recently I spent a little time reading a Batman comic. In this particular comic, he is often called, or calls himself «The Batman». Most often though, in films and comics, he is known simply as «Batman». What is the difference and does it matter?
Batman: Is the name of this dark, sombre, fear-inducing hero of Gotham city. He dresses in bat form and fights against criminals and injustice. Batman is a name.
The Batman: Has a different meaning. Firstly, it suggests that he is unique, there is no other Batman in Gotham, maybe the world. Secondly, that it is a role and not simply a name. It holds the meaning that he performs a service for the people, whether they want it or not. It’s a lot like «the mayor», «the school principal», «the police-chief», and «the director of the company».
Remember, articles can often change and add meaning, take care when using them.
